Are you catching that I resisted my budding womanhood?!

Today is my (gasp!) 51st birthday. When I read those words, "my 51st birthday," I feel completely disconnected from them. They can't possibly refer to me because 51 has always meant old, ugly, washed-up, and pathetic -- and call me delusional, but I refuse to believe that any of those things apply to me.

Aspirin - Bangkok Impack
Family Tree (OST Super Disco Break Beat) - Family Tree
Take Your Mind - Drexciya

To commemorate the day, I've decided to attempt an idea that I saw over at Mighty Girl's blog. She wrote a one or two-sentence description for each year of her life. The fact that my memory can dredge up 51 specific memories for 51 specific years means that I'm still young, quick and spry, doesn't it? (Or does the fact that I just used the word "spry" negate any and all claims to youth?)

I mentioned Trevor Combee as one of my inspirations for my recent “Now THAT’S What I Call Techno” mix, but really he is as responsible for the music i listen to now as anyone else. Trevor owned and operated HyperVinyl Records in Pittsburgh starting back in 1997 and later started the label of the same name. I can remember the first time i met him: I was a 17 year old sporting an A.C. t-shirt coming into his record shop back on Atwood St. in the college neighborhood of Oakland checking out Deadly Systems and Aphrodite 12″s. When I asked him about where I could find turntables for sale, he gave me the typically angry sounding Trevor blowoff. I knew right away that he was alright.

The cheapest

I've been neglecting you guys again, work and other commitments have been stealing time from you - ok so for the minute I'm gonna pop up a slice of deeply cosmic Disco with heavy heavy ecclesiastical tones to it by the always awesome Venus Gang, perhaps one of my all time top Disco bands, even though their output was small, it was certainly all good. 'Dies Irae' didn't strike me on the first few listens, perhaps its grandiose Armageddon imagery and sound put me off a little, other tracks off their 1978 album grabbed me instantly. Later on, with more listens, this particular track has really sunk in, its a little masterpiece for sure, and a disco take on a medieval Latin Hymn called 'Day of Wrath'... check it out and hunt down the lp...

Hey Shirls, talk to ya later!

There are two girls standing in front of the castle. This castle belongs to an evil sorceress. One of the girls a little bit dirty, and she looks like she's about to fall over. Just behind her are several very large dogs. The other girl is dressed in leather armor and next to her is a single, shaggy yellow dog. She has come to rescue the beast girl from the evil sorceress. And the beast girl is not altogether happy about this.

Deus - The Sugarcubes
Duchess - The Stranglers

I should mention at this point that I've seen our rescuer before. Once during a particularly stressful council meeting that somehow involved my grandmother, money, and unruly youth council representatives. I looked over to find her sitting in the circle along with us, and everyone got very quiet. Then again in a bookstore. I looked up over the pile of books and we both started and stared at each other for several moments. Once more on a street in the Marina, at which point I was following her, for some reason that was never made apparent to me. Always with this huge shaggy yellow dog.

Pick Up The Pieces - Hudson Ford

So I'm not altogether surprised to find this girl attempting to rescue the beast girl, although I'm a little amused about the armor, and the fact that the beast girl doesn’t want to go. There's some sort of commotion in the castle and the next thing I know, both girls are booking it out of there, one shaggy yellow dog in toe. Eventually our rescuer has to carry the beast girl, as she's exhausted, and finally they stop in front of a "good guy" patrol.

The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke - Glass Candy & The Shattered Theatre
Untitled - The Thai Orchestra

These are not very nice good guys as it turns out. I'm not sure what their intentions are towards the Beast Girl but they’re yelling at the rescuer until the beast girl approaches, leaning on the rescuer for support, and shows the patrol leader something on her arm. She tells him that she commands the evil sorceress's beast army. At this the patrol gets friendlier, if more wary about Beast Girl.

Stone Roller - Arpadys

I removed my hand and continued.

to look for ways to use my poetry / rhetoric theory against the logic of late consumer capitalism that I have neglected to develop the idea that 4GW is already in use against us (I really mean you & I). Well, I haven't developed much of anything yet. So here's another beginning: I think that advertising, TV, internet, movies, video games, books, periodicals, and more are used by corporations around the world as ammunition in a multidimensional 4GW battle. By multidimensional, I mean that combat can occur on many different levels, and that military victory has a subtle and dynamic relationship with economic, cultural, and social victory.

Ballad Of The Band - Felt
La Glora De Dios - Proa

If you have secure economic hegemony, you have little reason to seek military engagement. So I think that the line between corporations and states is overemphasized--that their interests and actions are intricately connected.

Troglodyte - The Jimmy Castor Band

Was Tetris a communist plot to waste American time and constrict its thinking into little imaginary squares? Does the CIA sell crack in American inner cities to prevent the advancement of its underclass? Okay, a Canadian example: is the collapse of our national identity into the slogan of an American-owned beer company an orchestrated attempt to produce a cultural amnesia that renders us vulnerable to total Americanization?

Moon In June - Soft Machine

Do the values espoused by mainstream rap artists (in an industry run by five white men) teach the masses to be misogynistic, materialistic, violent, disorganized, and blind to the actual class structures of society?

But after all that “discussion” on that forum, and all the bitter criticism I receive, my post Boycott All Men still stands! I’m NOT taking it down. I WILL NOT CENSOR MYSELF ON MY OWN WEBSITE And I WILL NOT BE COWED INTO RETRACTING MY OPINIONS!!! If you really hate what I have to say so much LEAVE! DON’T READ ME! And I mean that with all the forcefulness and intensity in which it was relayed.

Solitron Waves - Mudboy

Which brings me to my next point--Hollywood! Any person who believes that Hollywood has his interests at heart needs to take off his rose colored blinders. Hollywood is essentially a money-making machine. Why do salacious acts, graphic violence, and lewd profanity mar our films? Give up? Because it SELLS! If it didn’t sell than Hollywood would be making innocent family films. People often feel like they are powerless to control the media, as if they can’t do anything about the obscenity that’s further polluting our world and the mind’s of our children. It’s almost like folk are saying “oh no, I just can’t control my remote!” and “oh no, the movie made me buy it!” I loathe most of the content in our media so I don’t indulge in it! Ah simplicity.

On Feb. 9, 1964, the Beatles played on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Or as Steven Van Zandt remembers the moment: “It was the beginning of my life.”

Breakaway - William Truckaway
If There Is Something - Roxy Music

Van Zandt fell for the Beatles and discovered the blues and early rock music that inspired them. He played in a series of bands on the Jersey shore, and when a friend wanted to draw on his encyclopedic blues knowledge for a song called “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” Van Zandt wound up as a guitarist for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Psajhtyneet Planeetat - Islaja

The 1970s were a great moment for musical integration. Artists like the Rolling Stones and Springsteen drew on a range of musical influences and produced songs that might be country-influenced, soul-influenced, blues-influenced or a combination of all three. These mega-groups attracted gigantic followings and can still fill huge arenas.

Bylos (Prins Thomas Edit) - Mindless Boogie
Trepanated Earth - Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti

But cultural history has pivot moments, and at some point toward the end of the 1970s or the early 1980s, the era of integration gave way to the era of fragmentation. There are now dozens of niche musical genres where there used to be this thing called rock. There are many bands that can fill 5,000-seat theaters, but there are almost no new groups with the broad following or longevity of the Rolling Stones, Springsteen or U2.

Trouble I've Had - Clarence Ashe

The Sound of Leamington Spa

If his first album, Table for One, told of the everyday struggle to hold down a decent adult relationship, this album dares to explore the wider landscape of love, taking in a few agony page tales along the way. As ever, Darren delves in and out of the minds of loved up and disappointed characters, including a faithful teacher (Art and Design) and an out-of-sorts young woman (Rochelle).

No One Gets The Prize - Diana Ross
Total Panic - The Human League

Yet, at the same time, a sort of homey contentment settles over the record; She’s Not for Me is certain in its rejection of a flaky type of girl and Apologise is honest about failure to do washing up, while Let’s Go Stealing surprisingly steers clear of love altogether and instead celebrates the joy of borrowing words from books and songs. The album is also a welcome return to the folk pop sound which characterised many of Hefner’s earlier songs, and proof that a fondness for both ukeleles and synthesisers is not fundamentally incompatible.

Kriminal Theme - Les Maledictus Sound

Darren is currently touring the UK, and at the Kilburn Luminaire (Monday November 12th, 2007) he roped in a folk-artillery of a banjo, ukulele and violin, with just himself and a friend from The Wave Pictures on guitar.

water the good music down

While record shopping this weekend, as I seem to do every weekend, I came across a few hidden rare gems. One of those rare disco LP's was Southern Exposure's Headin' South. This 1979 RCA release was produced by Ian Guenther and Willi Morrison which are better known as THP (Three Hats Productions).

Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun - Pink Floyd
Logical Song - Supertramp
The Chameleon (Instrumental) - Glass Candy

This four track LP was also arranged by Pete Pedersen who was behind many great disco releases like Sticky Fingers 1978 self-titled LP, THP's solid 1979 LP Good To Me, and The Duncan Sisters 1979 self-titled debut. Overall, this record which features both male and female vocals, amazing percussion and strings, and long epic instrumental breaks, is worthy of any disco collection. Definitely a nice find!

London - Noonday Underground
Embryonic Pancake Eater - Sun Eaters

This record, along with Giorgio Moroder's LP From Here To Eternity could be considered by many as the birth place of italo disco. With classic cuts like "Delicate Jan", "It's The Way", and "Hey There", it's evident that this record had a huge helping influence on the creation and development of italo disco.

Casanova - Coffee

A solid new effort from this upcoming German producer.

None of us are ever fully born are we? Those fortunate enough to give birth to themselves, to experience rebirth, even partial rebirth, are countless seasons of bloom beyond the many whom, sadly, wander reacting, as if stillborn, unto death.

Johnny and Mary - Robert Palmer
What Wilbur - Snakefinger

Once you are first born, the pressure of the contracting uterus is replaced by the contractions of life and culture. This pressure reinforces steadiness, less change, not more. The contractions of life press you into a tighter mold of who you were, deforming projections, extensions and surprise until you are smoother, smaller, more tightly wound, less festooned with unpredictability, surprise, bombshells and bonanza, until you are ultimately pressed back to a fetal form, simply reacting to your environment within a rigid decision frame you erroneously consider as thinking. Here are some terms that come to mind from the lexicon of birth, and what they seem to transmogrify into…

Yoo Doo Right - Masaki Batoh

As we promised, here is the transcript of Pastor Smith’s (a pseudonym) recent sermon about “The Anointing.” We have some commentary that we’ll also post in an upcoming article, but for now, just read it for what it is. Yes, we’re aware that this is an extremely long post, but we’d really appreciate if you’d take the time to read the full transcript. And please, give us your feedback. How do YOU think Pastor Smith’s teaching lines up with the Bible?

The Anointing, by Pastor Smith

(1) Stand to our feet across the house. I want you to open your Bible into the book of I Samuel. I’m gonna read 3 scriptures I’m gonna read 3 scriptures to you, so if you can, be a little mobile today, if not, watch the screen, they’ll be on the screen.

(2) Uh, but in first Samuel, the tenth chapter, and the sixth and the seventh verses, and this is Samuel talking to Saul, “And the spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them and shalt be turned into another man, and let it be when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee, for God is with thee.”

Prestel - The Homosexuals
Mother's Love - Tsegué-Maryam Guebrou

(3) Now turn over a few chapters to the sixteenth chapter of first Samuel, now this is after, this is after David’s called out, his brothers are reviewed, and Samuel says basically, um, the king is not amongst them. They finally get David out of the shepherd’s field and the thirteenth verse says, “Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brethren and the spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.”

(4) And then flip over to the New Testament into the book of Acts, if you’d turn over to the book of Acts the tenth chapter and the thirty eighth verse. Acts the tenth chapter, the 38th verse. “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him.”

(5) Father, anoint me today with this Holy Ghost, with this power of the Holy Spirit, Lord, that you have graciously released and bestowed upon our lives to do impossible things, and Lord I pray today that your people will have an ear to hear they will have a mind to perceive, they will have a heart to believe. And I declare, God, that the spiritual side of who we are will become awakened and stirred and ignited. And that we will leave this house today truly empowered by your presence and by your Spirit, in the name of Jesus, and everybody said amen. Amen!

Sing On - The Eureka Brass Band

(6) You may be seated. For the next few Sundays I’m gonna be preaching about the anointing. And I will be carrying over in different aspects and dynamics of it into the Wednesday night as well. So, Sunday morning and Wednesday nights I’m going to be really digging in to the subject of the anointing.

Dear Friends, (this is gonna be a long one.....)
A funny thing happened on the way to taking a little blog break... you see, I just wanted to take a break, ok? just a little break... to re-group, get some of my art projects organized and just have an online "breather" in general. Well, actually, a few things happened. Let me splain....it's never a short story with me...especially when it's been "long time, no talk".

Automatic Lover - Dee D. Jackson
Don't You Let Me Down Again - Buckingham Nicks

Well, first of all...I got hit with a "forced break". A time out that I didn't want. I guess all the running around I'd been doing the last two months wore me down and I came down with a bad case of strep throat. I am now on my second batch of antibiotics and very, very slowly recovering. I've had 2 tests for mono. Both negative. Thank goodness. I have not been a happy camper. I guess my body did know that I had to take a break, but I guess I did it a little late, then ka-bloom.

After Laughter - Freddie & Ernest
De Papel - Matias Aguayo

I've pretty much been on bed rest and of no use to anyone for more than 10 days now. This has been especially hard for me because, well, a) I normally hit the ground running and I wanna do stuff b) I have kids and people who look at me expecting caregiving and simply don't understand that Moms, do, infact, get sick. We are also suseptible to the common cold. Yes, we are. Don't look at me that way. Get your own cereal for crying out loud! Make yourself a dang quesadilla..
